Sunday, May. 17th
Sci Fi Book Club with Gabe
Join us each month, 4 to 6PM on the third Sunday, for a science fiction book club that explores big ideas. Ray Bradbury called science fiction "the literature of ideas" and "the art of the possible," a history of ideas about how science and technology shape our future. But science fiction is also a literature of culture and critique, a genre with its own distinctive literary style and structure that sparks genuine conversation and opens up new ways of seeing the world. We plan to read classic and contemporary science fiction, and we will talk about what these stories reveal about science, society, art, and what it means to be human.
All are welcome. Our first meeting will be Sunday, May 17th. Our first book will be Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer. At our first meeting, we'll have time to talk about future book choices.
The organizer is Gabe Cutrufello, a Professor in the English and Writing program and Chair of the Department of Communication and Writing at York College of Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses in Writing Studies and Rhetoric as well as science fiction literature. He is a lifelong devotee of science fiction books, short stories, movies, and comic books. Some of his favorite authors of compelling and groundbreaking SF include Ursula K. Le Guin, Samuel Delany, Octavia Butler, Philip K. Dick, Stanisław Lem, Yoss, Ann Leckie, qntm, and Iain M. Banks. On the film side, he’s a sucker for John Carpenter's The Thing (that claustrophobic tension and those groundbreaking practical effects!) and the first two Alien films.
