The Sunday Picture - September

  • West Art 800 Buchanan Avenue Lancaster, PA, 17603 United States (map)

The Sunday Picture is a monthly film series hosted by local film buffs Matt Johnson and Skyler Gibbon. Each Sunday PIcture Series will deliver a deep-dive into a movement, theme, figure or genre of film. Each screening will start with a brief informative introduction by your hosts, followed by a group conversation of the movie. But there's more: the Sunday Picture staff (aka Skyler and Matt) will pair each film with a thematic cocktail and food option for your enjoyment. We will take turns writing essays about the films shown that will include the wonderful insights of our audience-guests.

Our first series will concern the ever elusive Film Noir. Is it a genre or a style? What foreign influences created this American genre? Why is it such a popular genre?

The first film in our series is the great Le jour se leve (Daybreak) by Marcel Carne. Daybreak is a masterpiece of French Poetic Realism, one of the most direct ancestors of film noir. In it we'll see many of the core elements of the noir genre (shadows and light, gritty realism, love, obsession and murder).
